Does anyone know of an RSS Reader that allows you to filter out postings? I subscribed to the mainfeed of http://blogs.msdn.com/ and out of the 200 new messages (maximum on Bloglines), about 80% is the same posting (with a twist) shouting to everyone to get the betas for Vista and/or Office 2007.

Yes, we know you can download them now.

Oops, now I said it too...

That's what I meant with 'good news show' last friday: there's hardly any news on blogs.msdn.com (which is a DEVELOPERS feed!!), just another marketing channel...

# RSS filter with Outlook Rules? 5/26/2006 11:02 AM Stefan Stranger
Hi Sander, I thought about filtering RSS feeds and because I'm using IntraVnews as RSS Reader in Outlook, I tried to create an Outlook Rule that flagged all post with 2007 in the subject. That worked, but then you be able to create a new RSS Filter Rule everytime a new feed is downloaded. But I'm not a developer but maybe it's possible to create a Outlook macro that would create a new Rule everytime a new download session of RSS feeds starts.

Regards,
Stefan

Yeah, I suppose with an offline reader there are a few options. I was just expressing my general frustration that when you browse through the MSDN blog feed, almost everyone seemed to blog about the new beta's. In this respect I share Frans' feeling on this being mostly a marketing channel. Maybe I should just unsubscribe, because it takes too much time picking the interesting posts from the rest of the flock.
How about community edited rss-feeds...? Maybe that would work.
Cheers,
Sander

# FeedRinse 5/28/2006 10:48 PM Stefan Stranger
After giving your frustation more thought I went googling and found FeedRinse (http://feedrinse.com). Feed Rinse is an easy to use tool that lets you automatically filter out syndicated content that you aren't interested in. It's like a spam filter for your RSS subscriptions. I'm now signing up for it and giving it a try.
But it still does not do what I would like to have. I would like to have a flag or something if the feed I am getting is having say five or more the same important words in the subject or body. Like 'vista', 'beta', 'download', 'office 2007', 'microsoft'. Would not that be a great feed filter?

Regards,
Stefan Stranger

Hey Stefan,
Funny name for a product. But it looks cool, and not even that complex to make. Although it filters out, why not have something that filters in. I think that's also what you (and me) would be looking for. Given an opml-list with a large number of bloggers, you only want the postings with pre-selected words in it. I would have to give it more thought. In the mean time, I'll try Feedrinse it as well.
